Ranges from the western Cape to Natal (Ref. 3197). Common along Atlantic Cape waters, migrating to Transkei and Natal each winter (Ref. 3197). Stock secure, decline reversed after purse seine netting was curtailed; expoited by game fishers (Ref. 4332). Angling record: 58.5 kg; spearfishing record: 34.2 kg (Ref. 12484).
